Product Questions

How do I decide between the Original and Extreme tooth structures?

Kutzall Original - The teeth, while uniform in height, are more randomly arranged; this allows them to run more smoothly on much harder materials. The 'finer' coarseness are also a bit less aggressive than their Extreme counterparts and may leave a slightly smoother finish.

Kutzall Extreme - The open-spaced nature of the teeth are exceptionally resistant to loading; especially on wet or gummy materials. They are great for heavy material removal but also leave a desirable finish despite their aggressiveness.

Note: With all products, if you simply lighten up on the pressure during use, you may achieve an even finer surface finish!

What's the comparison to sandpaper?

The structured tooth technology creates a unique hybrid effect of fast material removal and desirable finish quality, therefore, it's difficult to directly compare to conventional sandpaper grit. A general correlation may be viewed as:

Kutzall Very Coarse: Removes material similar to a #10 Grit and leaves the approximate finish of a #60 Grit.

Kutzall Fine: Removes material  simliar to a #30 Grit and leaves the approximate finish of a #80 Grit.

It's typically unnecessary to select various grades of coarseness as a digression to achieve a finer end result. Simply select the product with the material removal rate you're most comfortable with, the surface quality can be adjusted by the pressure applied!

What power tools do you recommend?

1/8" Shaft Rotary Burrs: Compatible with smaller corded or battery handpieces or flex-shaft power tools with 1/8" collets or adjustable chucks.

1/4" Shaft Rotary Burrs: Compatible with larger corded or battery die grinders, or pneumatic power tools with 1/4" collets or adjustable chucks.

Shaping Wheels: We recommend using 4-1/2" and 7" angle grinders, with 5/8-11 shafts for their respective wheels sizes.

See Power Tool Compatibility Chart

Can the Rotary Burrs be used in a drill or drill press?

Kutzall tools will remove material at lower speeds such as hand drills and drill presses, however both material-removal rate and control improve as speed increases. We suggest operating the products at higher recommended RPM ranges.

What are the recommended RPM's?

Rotary Burrs: 15,000 - 30,000 RPM

Shaping Wheels: 5,000 - 15,000 RPM

What do the different colors mean?

The color coding system denotes the grade of coarseness:

Original: Fine (Gold), Coarse (Silver), Very Coarse (Copper)

Extreme: Medium (Teal), Coarse (Blue), Very Coarse (Black)

What's the difference between the Dish Wheels and Shaping Disc?

Dish Wheels: The rounded form lets you effortlessly contour and shape, allowing you to add whole new dimensions to your project.

Shaping Disc: The semi-flat profile allows you to easily level high spots, adjust uneven surfaces, or controlled convex shaping.

My grinder has a 5/8" shaft, why do your wheels have a 7/8" bore?

Proper fitment of the Kutzall Shaping Wheels ensures your tools will operate safely and provide maximum results. The Shaping Wheels feature a 7/8" I.D. and are intended to mount on a standard electric angle grinder with a 5/8" shaft. They mount on the 7/8" shoulder found on the flange or adapter included with most angle grinders. The flange is put on the grinder first, followed by the wheel and then the nut. How long do the tools last?

Tungsten-carbide is one of the hardest materials in the world, allowing Kutzall tools to have incredible wear-life. Although longevity is dependent on materials and frequency of use, for the average hobbyist, the tools will last many years. Most people damage their tools due to neglect before they wear-out, so use proper care when handling them!

Can I use the tools on metal?

No, Kutzall tools are not intended for use on metals, ceramics or hard stones.

What materials can the tools be used on?

Kutzall tools can be used on wide variety of materials including: wood, rubber, plastic, fiberglass, epoxy, rigid foam, ice, bone and soft-stone.

How do I clean Kutzall tools?

They can easily be cleaned by a soft wire (brass) brush. For really wet or gummy materials you may soak the tools in a solvent such as Simple Green, or even burn the material - the heat won't harm the teeth!
