How do I choose between Original and Extreme?

Original: uniformly tall teeth in a more random arrangement run smoothly on harder suitable materials. Finer grades are less aggressive and can leave a slightly smoother finish.

Extreme: open-spaced teeth resist loading, especially in wet or gummy material, while providing fast removal and a controllable finish.

With either style, lighter pressure can help refine the surface. Explore structured tooth technology.

Which coarseness should I choose?

Coarseness is primarily about material removal rate. Choose the rate you feel comfortable controlling.

  • Finer grades: slower removal for lighter shaping and smaller adjustments.
  • Coarser grades: faster removal when you have more material to shape.

All grades can produce a quality finish. Lighten your pressure to refine the surface. You do not need to work through each grade as you might with sandpaper.

Available grades vary by product. Compare tooth styles and coarseness.

How does Kutzall compare with sandpaper grit?

Kutzall uses structured tungsten-carbide teeth, so there is no direct sandpaper-grit equivalent. Removal rate and surface finish are two different comparisons.

As a rough reference, Very Coarse removes material like approximately 10-grit while leaving a finish around 60-grit. Fine removes material like approximately 30-grit while leaving a finish around 80-grit.

These are general comparisons, not guaranteed finishes. Material, pressure and technique all affect the result.

What do the different tool colors mean?

Colors identify the coarseness within each tooth style:

  • Original: Fine is gold; Coarse is silver; Very Coarse is copper.
  • Extreme: Medium is teal; Coarse is blue; Very Coarse is black.

Always check the named grade on the product listing or packaging when choosing a tool.

What is the difference between a Dish Wheel and a Shaping Disc?

Dish Wheels have a rounded profile for contours, curves and hollows.

Shaping Discs have a semi-flat profile for leveling high spots, adjusting uneven surfaces and shaping convex forms.

Compare Shaping Wheel profiles.

Where do Contour Wheels fit in?

Contour Wheels bring a compact, rounded profile to hollowing and shaping inside curves. They use a separate adapter system, rather than the mounting arrangement used by a Shaping Wheel.

A 1/4″ shaft adapter is included. Optional adapters are available for compatible angle grinders and the Arbortech Mini Carver.

Which power tool works with my Kutzall accessory?
  • 1/8″ shaft burrs: small rotary tools, micromotors and compatible flex-shaft handpieces with the correct collet or approved chuck.
  • 1/4″ shaft burrs: die grinders and compatible flex-shaft handpieces with a matching 1/4″ collet.
  • Shaping Wheels: angle grinders with the correct wheel diameter, guard, mounting flange and nut.

Confirm the accessory and power-tool speed ratings before use. See the Power Tool Compatibility guide.

Can I use Kutzall burrs with a Dremel rotary tool?

Choose a Kutzall burr with a 1/8″ (3.2 mm) shaft for a Dremel rotary tool with a matching collet or compatible chuck. Check your model’s manual, operating speed and any attachment limits before use.

Our 1/4″ shaft burrs are for larger tools. See the Power Tool Compatibility guide for more fit guidance.

Does the burr’s shaft size describe its carving head?

No. Shaft size is the diameter held by your power tool’s collet or approved chuck. Head dimensions describe the part that carves the workpiece.

Listed head diameter and length are base dimensions. The teeth add approximately 0.060″–0.164″ to the overall dimensions, so allow for them when working in tight spaces.

Choose the shaft to fit your power tool, then choose the head shape and dimensions for the area you want to carve.

Compare rotary burrs.

Can I use a rotary burr in a drill or drill press?

We do not recommend hand drills or drill presses for Kutzall rotary burrs.

Both material-removal rate and control improve as speed increases toward the burr’s recommended operating range. Choose a compatible rotary tool, die grinder or flex-shaft handpiece, and never exceed the lowest maximum speed rating in your setup.

Find a recommended power-tool setup.

What speed should I run my tool at?

Use the instructions and speed rating for your exact Kutzall accessory and power tool. Never exceed the lowest maximum rating of the accessory, adapter or handpiece in your setup.

The recommended operating range for Kutzall rotary burrs is 15,000–30,000 RPM. Both material-removal rate and control improve as speed increases toward the burr’s recommended operating range. Hand drills and drill presses are not recommended. Shaping Wheels and Contour Wheels need their own product-specific checks; do not apply one speed range to every wheel size.

If you are unsure, send us your power-tool model and Kutzall product before using them together.

My grinder has a 5/8″ shaft. Why is the wheel bore 7/8″?

The wheel seats on the mounting flange’s shoulder, not directly over the grinder shaft. A 5/8″ shaft therefore does not mean you need a wheel with a 5/8″ bore.

For standard mounting, the flange has a 7/8″ shoulder and the nut matches the 5/8-11 shaft thread. Metric mounting uses the appropriate 22 mm flange shoulder and M14 nut.

Follow the Wheel Mounting Guide for the mounting sequence, hardware and clearance checks.

What materials can I carve with Kutzall?

Kutzall tools work on wood, rubber, plastic, fiberglass, epoxy, rigid foam, ice, bone and soft stone.

Choose a tool and technique suited to the material. Follow the material’s handling guidance and use appropriate dust collection and protective equipment, especially with composites.

Explore the tool range.

Can I use Kutzall on metal, ceramic or hard stone?

No. Kutzall tools are not intended for metals, ceramics or hard stone. Choose an accessory designed for those materials instead.

How can I get a smoother finish?

Use light pressure and let the tool do the work. Ease your pressure further as you approach the shape you want. Every grade can leave a quality finish, and a lighter touch helps refine the surface with the tool you are already using.

Practice on a scrap of the same material first. Material, tool shape and technique affect the result; sanding may still be appropriate for your project’s final finish.

Cleaning + care

Resistant to loading and easy to clean, so you can spend more time carving.

How do I clean Kutzall tools?

A soft-wire brush is usually all you need. Kutzall teeth resist loading, so heavy build-up is uncommon. Disconnect the power source and remove the accessory before cleaning, then use a soft brass wire brush to clear the teeth.

For stubborn build-up, soaking in a suitable cleaner such as Simple Green can help. Follow the cleaner’s label, brush away loosened material and dry thoroughly. Do not submerge a hand rasp’s rubber handle.

Torch cleaning is another option for stubborn wood build-up only. Follow the full Cleaning + Care Guide for the method and precautions.

How long do Kutzall tools last?

Structured tungsten-carbide teeth provide long wear-life. Actual life depends on the material, frequency of use and how the tool is handled; many hobbyists get years of use.

Keep the teeth clean and protect them from knocks during storage. Inspect the tool before use and replace it if it is damaged.
