Details + dimensions

Contours, edges + tighter spaces

The Kutzall 1/8″ Shaft Taper Burr narrows toward the tip, combining power carving on outside contours and edges with access to smaller spaces. Use the wider part of the profile to shape a contour, then move toward the tip for fine details, concave cuts or undercuts. It is a versatile woodcarving shape for projects that need both broad shaping and more focused work.

The 1/8″ shaft fits a matching collet or compatible adjustable chuck on a small rotary tool. Match the head size to the space you want to carve, and check your power tool’s mounting and speed limits before use.

Mounting Guide

Kutzall burr shafts seated in rotary-tool collets
Match the shaft to your tool’s collet or chuck.
  1. Match your shaft size

Use a 1/8″ collet or compatible adjustable chuck on a suitable rotary tool, die grinder or flex-shaft handpiece. Hand drills and drill presses are not recommended.

  2. Seat the shaft securely

Insert at least half of the shaft into the collet or chuck. Secure it according to your power tool’s instructions.

  3. Use the recommended speed

Recommended operating range: 15,000–30,000 RPM. Both material-removal rate and control improve as speed increases toward the burr’s recommended operating range. Never exceed the lowest maximum speed rating in your setup. Use light pressure and let the tool do the work.

  4. Let it stop completely

Let your power tool stop completely before setting it down.

Caring for your Kutzall

Cleaning a Kutzall hand rasp with a wire brush
Brush away buildup

A few passes with a soft wire brush help clear material from between the teeth.

Using a torch to clear buildup from a Kutzall shaping wheel
Clear stubborn residue

A torch can remove stubborn buildup from the metal working surface. The tungsten-carbide teeth tolerate the heat.

Protect the teeth

Kutzall’s tungsten-carbide teeth are securely brazed to the steel tool with a nickel alloy. Protect the teeth from impact against hard surfaces, especially while spinning. Let your power tool stop completely before setting it down.

Not for use on metals, ceramics or hard stone.

More on tool care

Let the tool cool before handling. Keep heat away from handles and other non-metal components.

    Love at first cut

Fellow wood worker recommended this on YouTube - Matt? Mike? Whoever you are THANK YOU. I had kind of lost my passion for carving. Things weren’t turning out how I wanted, the burs I have were just not getting where I needed, local stores had little to no value for me for their bur selection was pitiful. I have so many projects set aside. This bur cuts as deep as needed, with ease; it gives a nearly polished look after. I use a lot of cedar and redwood- I think this will same time on sanding and diamond finishes. I’m very pleased, basically. I had no idea burs like this existed

    Best in the buisness

Although the investment is considerably high, the product is very good.

    Better than the rest.

I’ve used burrs from a number of companies. Kutzall works better on wood than any other, and is often less expensive. Plus: Made in America. That means something to me.

Easy detailing thanks to this burr

Really able to get into those areas that you need to be deeper and not wider. So glad you came up with this burr.
