Our Story of grit

And for us, grit has two meanings—both at the core of who we are.

The first applies when talking about abrasive particles. For over 60 years, we’ve been unimpressed with sandpaper and conventional abrasives. Our grandfather—equal parts inventor and mad scientist—set out to create something better. What he built changed the way makers shape, carve, and detail their work.

After World War II, there was a surplus of tungsten-carbide—a metal known for its incredible hardness and wear resistance. At the time, our grandfather was selling mining bits made from tungsten carbide when he recognized new possibilities. Rather than letting valuable materials go to waste, he began reclaiming and repurposing tungsten-carbide; long before "recycling” and "sustainability" were common practice. His curiosity led to the development of a structured carbide tooth design that outperformed anything on the market for shaping materials like fiberglass, rubber, and wood. Growing up in a hunting and fishing community along the banks of Lake St. Clair, he shared his new creation with friends carving wooden duck decoys. They quickly realized it was a game-changer.

And just like that, Kutzall Power Carving was born.

The second meaning of grit is courage and resolve. It’s what carried our family through decades of challenges, recessions, and the uphill climb of building a world-class manufacturing company from the ground up. For three generations, grit—along with ingenuity, innovation, and integrity—has fueled our growth and earned the trust of makers across the globe.

It's About Empowering Makers to Push Boundaries, Shape Their Vision, and Create Their Best Work.

Grandpa’s persistence led him to unlock the full potential of tungsten-carbide, developing tooth patterns that delivered unmatched performance, control, and durability. When his son Rex joined the business, he focused on listening to tradespeople and refining tools to meet their needs. Under his leadership, Kutzall became a trusted name among professionals throughout North America.

In 2007, we, Rex’s sons Mike and Scott, carried the torch forward. We inherited great products, an incredible team, and a respected name—and set out to expand Kutzall’s reach. Since then, we’ve grown our dealer network, strengthened ecommerce, built white-label partnerships with leading power-tool brands, and entered new global markets—making Kutzall tools more accessible than ever.

And while technology has evolved, our philosophy hasn’t. We still craft every Kutzall tool with purpose, precision, and pride—right here in America. True to our roots, we continue to give new life to old materials by using recycled carbide from retired end mills, reamers, and drill bits—transforming them into the next generation of cutting and shaping tools.

For us, it’s never been just about tools—it’s about empowering makers to push boundaries, shape their vision, and create their best work.

After six decades, our story of grit is still being written.

And the best chapters are yet to come.
